The 2018 Walk30 Burnaby | New West Challenge Cup
goes to....

Walk30 Burnaby New West has finished for this year.  Over 3200 people participated, from the two communities! We had over 80 Burnaby classrooms participating, and over 20 from New Westminster. Overall, participants logged over 700,000 minutes of walking, an average of 27 minutes per day for every participant, an amazing turnout!

We wrapped up with a Walking Festival on Saturday at Edmonds Community Centre. Several hundred people learned about walking opportunities, safety and well being, enjoyed live music from a New Westminster Senior Secondary Jazz Combo, shared walking playlist ideas with the Leo Club from Burnaby School District, and explored games and activities organized by Burnaby Parks, Culture and Recreation.

The big question of the day was: Which city WON the Walk30 challenge?

It was a tight race between Burnaby and New West to see who would win the inaugural Walk30 Challenge Cup, and it was not easy to choose the winner. Burnaby schools had a phenomenal turnout, with about 900 classroom walks done! New Westminster residents tied up their laces and logged over 3000 walks.

In the end, though, the city competition was measured by registration and total minutes walked. In Burnaby approx. 2388 people—1% of the Burnaby population—walked 324,402 minutes, or 47% of the total minutes walked. In New Westminster, approx. 874 people—1.2% of the population—walked 362,198 minutes, or 52% of the total, earning them the inaugural Walk30 Challenge Cup.

Congratulations, New Westminster!

Schools were measured by the number of classes and level of engagement. In Burnaby, Armstrong Elementary and Suncrest Elementary were the winners, and Lord Kelvin Elementary won in New Westminster. Each school will receive $250 to spend on physical literacy resources.
Walk30 planners hope to hold the challenge again in 2019. Funding was provided, in part, by the BC Physical Activity Strategy, a provincial initiative to foster active people and active places.

We hope we can run this event again next year! Stay tuned!
